Great Job Demand

Monster.com said that Cyber-Security may well be the best career for veterans right now. Cyberseek.org shows over 500,000 job openings right now and the supply of qualified workers is very low.

Pay is well above average

According to Ziprecruiter.com, as of Feb 20, 2021, the average annual pay for Cyber Security in the United States is $112,974 a year.

So why is this especially good for veterans?

Veterans already come in with transferable skills. As the article by Monster pointed out, “veterans’ understanding of “defense in depth, redundant systems and active defense” make them particularly well-suited to these jobs.

There is another big reason veterans have an advantage: government regulation DOD 8570. If someone has access to sensitive government data, whether they are working for a government agency, government contractor or private employer with access to this data, they are required to have at least one of the specified certifications for that role.

Some of these jobs also require a security clearance, something which many veterans still have. Even if they do not, it can cost a company tens of thousands of dollars to sponsor someone to get one. Veterans are typically safer bets to be able to get one.

If you have one already, you just saved a potential employer a ton of money. All you need now is to get your certification. These jobs typically pay more too since you have far less competition.

See if you Qualify for a WIOA Grant

Are you unemployed? There is a little known federal grant program that can pay for you to get trained, certified and placed in your career at no cost to you. Availability and amounts are based on where you live. If you qualify, this program can pay up to $10,000 to get trained, certified, and then get help getting placed in their career. The amount and availability vary by county

This can be used to get certified in fields such as Cyber-Security, Information Technology, Project Management, Business Analysis, and more. Some of the most highly sought-after certifications include CompTIA, Microsoft, Cisco, Project Management Professional (PMP), Scrum Master, and others.

No Risk Income Share Agreements

If you don’t qualify for a grant, see if you qualify for an Income Share Agreement. This is a no risk option–you pay nothing until you get placed and there is no interest.
