“I was “early retired” by the corporation I had worked for, for 18 years and was still going strong. There was no reason other than I already knew when you approach age 55 you could expect the “offer”. I happened to meet a … (Dewey) at a job fair and that started a relationship wherein I took a couple of classes and gained one certification which was critical in my job search. After 18 months I landed my dream job in IT with the VA national office due to that certification!! I am forever grateful to the services for the unemployed especially veterans of which I am one. Bravo zulu!!”

  • Cybersecurity, a fast-growing industry, offers many career opportunities and offers numerous job options. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the number of job openings in the cybersecurity field will be equal to or greater than the number of new workers entering the field each year.
  • That means there should always be a demand for cybersecurity professionals.

How can you tell if you are a good candidate for cybersecurity work?

  • Technology and cybersecurity are passions that you must be passionate about.
  • If you are not passionate about technology, it will be difficult to work remotely and remain focused on your job.

Get Hired in Cybersecurity Even Without A Degree

How to get hired as a Cybersecurity professional even without a degree

  • CompTIA Cybersecurity+ and CompTIA Net+ are two of the most important certifications that you’ll need, if you’re new to cybersecurity.
  • This is because of a less-known government regulation, DOD-8570.
  • Technically, it has been updated by DOD-8140 but still uses the DOD-8570 chart.
  • It states that if you are in a position where you might be exposed to sensitive government data, then you must have at least one of the certifications they have listed for that position.
  • CompTIA Security+ is usually the minimum required.
  • Even companies that will never work with the government are asking for this certification.
  • CompTIA Security+ and CompTIA Network+ are prerequisites. You will need to have a solid foundation in order to take those courses.
  • These certifications will get you further than a degree in cybersecurity without certifications, plus you will get there much more quickly.
  • You should be able to get a job if you have these certifications.

What is DOD-8570, and why is it important in cybersecurity?

  • It is a federal directive from the Department of Defense (DOD) that specifies that all US government agencies should use specific cybersecurity requirements for information systems.
  • These terms are also defined and prohibited from being used in the DOD.
  • On November 20, 1985, the Defense Technical Information Center issued DOD-8570 (Defense Technical Information Center). Its purpose was to protect DoD information systems from potential vulnerabilities of classified or unclassified information.
  • What this means is that many positions in this field have a legal requirement that you must have at least one of the certifications listed for that position.
  • CompTIA Security+ usually is the minimum.
  • What has happened is that many companies, even those who will never do business with the government, are copycats, and require the same certifications as the companies who are required to do so.

What are the benefits and drawbacks of a Cybersecurity Degree versus Cybersecurity Certifications?

What do cybersecurity workers prefer-a degree or certifications?

  • A cybersecurity degree costs more than a certification and takes longer.
  • Although the degree gives you a broad understanding that can be used in many industries, it does not have as many hands-on skills.
  • Employers want to see that you have the right certification.
  • Also, there is a legal requirement (see above).
  • According to Information Week’s Dark Reading salary survey, 70% said that certifications are the most important training for their careers. Only 10% said they have a bachelor’s degree while 5% said they have a master’s degree.

What Should Cybersecurity Training Look & Feel Like?

  • Due to the COVID-19 pandemic more people are looking for remote training. However, it is better to take LIVE classes than self-study.
  • Learning is more fun when you can ask questions of others and get answers.
  • The classes should be recorded, so you can review all or part of them later.
  • It should not cost extra to repeat classes if you have any questions.
  • There should be labs so you can get hands-on practice. The more often you can do the labs, the better you will understand and remember the concepts
  • It is important to have practice exams in order to make sure that you are prepared before taking the exam. Ideally, there should also be chances to cram for the exam with the instructor.
  • Instructors should be available to answer further questions when needed.

How Do I Start Cybersecurity Training?

Let’s see if you may be eligible for a WIOA Grant to pay for your training and job placement assistance (yes, it could be free if you qualify!)

Are you unemployed? Federal grant programs are not well-known and can help you get training, certification, and employment at no cost. Availability and amounts are based on where you live. If you are eligible, the program can pay up to $15,000 to help you get trained and certified. The availability and amount of this program vary by county.

If you qualify, you can use this grant to pay for you to get the training you need so we can help you get placed in your career

If you do not qualify for the WIOA grant, you have another risk-free option:

How to Get Started in Cybersecurity Training-No Risk!

A student loan is usually required to finance your education and training for a career. That can work out well for many people, but you need to be aware of the potential pitfalls:

This is where the problem lies: You are the one taking all the risks.

If you are unable to get a job, you will still have to repay the loan.

If you are unable to find a job but then lose it a year later you won’t have any income but you have to continue making payments.

Let’s say you get a deferment. Although you may not be making any payments, interest is still accruing. That means by the time you can start paying, you owe more than when you started.
Your debt will increase if you are involved in an accident that leaves you without work for a prolonged period of time.

The loan follows you around forever until it is paid off.
Many of us know someone who had problems with student loans.

There is a better way. You can get the training and certification you need to begin your career while still sleeping at night.

Introduce the risk-free option: Income share agreements

Income share agreements, which can be used to finance your education and help you get started in Eldorado, are innovative options for student financing that are debt-free. Consider Income Share Agreements if you’re thinking of starting a career in Eldorado.

There is no initial cost or risk of money falling. An income share agreement is a contract that takes a portion of your salary in exchange for training. However, you only owe the income share when you work and make an income exceeding the minimum threshold.

This is an easy way to get started in cybersecurity.

There is no interest charged on your debt. That means you don’t owe any more if it takes you longer to get a job and you do not owe any more if you lose your job and have to go a few months without paying.

You are not required to pay anything if your earnings fall below the minimum threshold for your program.

We offer an income sharing agreement that is risk free for anyone, even those with no experience or who are currently unemployed. This is because we are confident in the outcome. You do not pay until your work is completed. Ask other schools if they offer this.

A phone interview is required to see if this is right for you.
