You Lost Your Job. Now What?

So now you have lost your job. A big layoff, reorganization, reduction in force, your position was eliminated or whatever they called it, the fact remains that you are now out of work after many years through no fault of you own. It can seem scary, but I help many people just like you.

Perhaps you are lucky. Maybe you are well known in your industry, have the right connections and can get a job right away. For many of you, there could be a rude awakening instead.

The Job Market

The job market has changed. Everything you knew before about how to do your resume and cover letter may as well be thrown out the window. Instead of one resume and cover letter for everyone, you will need to adapt each one to the job you are applying for. Even your choice of font can make a difference.

What you must do to get back to work

Adapt and Change

You must adapt to current hiring practices and you better learn how to answer behavioral interview questions in the interview. You must also learn what an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is. If you are not there already, you also better get a profile on LinkedIn and optimize it so recruiters and hiring managers will see it.

Career Enhancer or Career Changer

You also must also determine if you are a career enhancer or a career changer. Ideally, you have transferrable skills from your previous job(s) we can use to look for the same or similar positions that pay well. Sometimes there are few openings in your exact position but many similar ones you may also be qualified for, or just need some short training to be marketable. Sometimes you have no choice and must change careers. This can be a mine field because the competition for entry -level jobs can be fierce.

If you are over 50, you are even more likely to run into ageism. We must look for career options where the demand is far greater than the supply and see if you have transferable skills into careers where your age is less of a factor (or even where mature workers are preferred)

Update Your Skills

Technology has changed every industry and you may need new technical skills before you are marketable again. Hiring managers put a greater emphasis on skills now versus experience. Everybody wants the latest and greatest skill sets, whereas experience alone could mean you are out-of-date. If these kills are not on your resume, chances are your resume gets deleted and the hiring managers never even see it. Luckily, you might be able to get what you need for free. If not, there is another program where you may be able to get what you need risk-free.

This is what I do, and I am very good at this. Let’s first see if you qualify for a grant or risk free option, then get started on getting you back into the workforce at a decent job with a good salary
